December Wrap-Up

Bild
So, December is gone, Christmas is over, the New-Year's-Eve-hangover is cured.... Time to look back on what I read in the last month of 2017! The Cancer Journals / Audre Lorde A wonderful, moving look into Audre Lorde's thoughts and feelings about her breast cancer and her breast amputation. She advocates not using a prosthesis, so as not to become invisible to the world as a breast cancer patient. A very personal insight and a feminist read. Rated four stars. Northern Lights (His Dark Materials 1) / Philip Pullman I really liked this. So atmospheric, such beautiful language, and a fascinating world where people live with part of their souls being daemons in the form of animals. Beware: I watched the film – unfortunately, it's no good. No wonder the movie series was never continued. The film changed a lot of plotlines, omitted many things and just couldn't catch the enchanting atmosphere of this book. Rated four stars. The Subtle Kn...

His Dark Materials Book Tag

Bild
After I've finally finished Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials"-series, here comes correspondent book tag, originally created by Holly Dunn Design on Youtube. 1. What editions of the books do you have? Like almost all of my books, I read this series on my Kindle. Which is kind of a shame, because the books are so beautiful. But there's just no more space on my shelves.... 2. Which is your favourite book? Definitely the first one. I loved the language, the setting, the story, the mystery..... With every book, the story got more confusing, and my reading experience wasn't that enjoyable anymore. I just didn't think that all the strands of the story were nicely tied up in the end. From the first book, I was expecting something quite different than what I got. 3. Who is your favourite character? Does Pantalaimon count as a character? I love his character, his sweetness, the way he looks out for Lyra and is always there for her. Wouldn't w...

Philip Pullman's "Northern Lights" - A Review

Bild
The Good: A strong female main character navigates through a beautifully created world full of adventures. The world really sucked me into it, with its armoured polar bears, daemons and selfish grown-ups. The Bad: I can't really find anything... Oh, I know: The movie! Unfortunately, "The Golden Compass" fails to capture any of the beauty of the book, although the cast is brilliant. But there's so much left out, and the story is completely turned around.... And the magic is just lost. The good thing: The movie flopped and the series wasn't continued. The surprising: When I started reading "Northern Lights", I had no idea what it was about. I didn't even know if to expect a book for children, Young Adults or Adults. So what is it? Actually, all of them. You can read this as a child, and just be amazed by Lyra's adventures. Or you can read it as an adult, and love the hints at the Authority's power plays, the idea of deamons as part ...

Why I love my Kindle

Bild
Yeah, I know... Loving your kindle isn't as popular as loving physical books. But let me assure you: I LOVE physical books. They're beautiful to look at, to feel in your hands, and to receive in the mail. And the beautiful shelves of course! Imagine the sadness of a kindle shelf.... BUT. I love my kindle as well. I never thought I would, and waited a very long time to purchase one. Way to long as I now know. Until I stopped buying new books because I just didn't have any more space on my shelves, and didn't want to let go of old books to make room for new ones. So the time had come. I ordered a kindle. And it opened up a new world for me. You have to know that while I love libraries I just couldn't seem to get on with them in the last few years. Where I live they're quite expensive, and a hassle to use. And, I have to admit, I do like owning books and having them ready to look at or re-read all the time. Maybe that's weird, but that's just ...

End of the Year Book Tag

Bild
The Christmas lights are on, it's dark when I leave the house in the morning and again when I come home in the evening, and I'm always cold – the end of the year is near! Time for the end of the year book tag. Question 1: Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish? Actually, no! I'm super proud of this. The only book I really wanted to finish before the end of the year was the third Game of Thrones book, and I've done that already. I've also started re-reading the Harry Potter series, which it would be nice to finish before the end of the year. On the other hand, I'm really savouring this reading experience, so I'll just take the time I need with those books. Question 2: Do you have an autumnal book to transition to the end of the year? No, I've pretty much started with my wintery reads now. November for me is more winter than autumn, and I love the Christmas season, so I've started all that very early. Right now ...
